World of Matter – On the Global Ecologies of Raw Material

01.03.2014 - 22.06.2014

"World of Matter" is an international research, exhibition, and online project investigating primary materials and the complex ecologies of which they are a part. The exhibition presents aesthetic and ethical approaches to the handling of resources, while challenging the anthropocentric assumption that the planet’s materials are primarily a resource for human consumption. The newly produced works engage mining in Brazil, oil extraction from Canada’s tar sands, rice and cotton production in southeast Asia, land reclamation in Egypt, fishing in the North Sea, the sugar trade in Nigeria, and coal mining in the Ruhr.

The exhibition "Requiem for a Bank" examines the new forms of industry, with a particular focus on the development of global financial markets since 1972 – a time when inflation, rising unemployment and successive oil crises combined with the emergence of new information technologies to give birth to a new kind of financial economy that was no longer dependent on real goods or services.

NEW INDUSTRIES FESTIVAL: INDUSTRIAL (Research)

14.09.2013 - 02.03.2014

"INDUSTRIAL (Research)" asks a deceptively simple question: What happened to industry? This question applies not only to the Ruhr but also to large parts of Belgium, Northern France, Northern England, the USA, and formerly socialist states in Eastern Europe. How does the so-called ‘structural change’ affect communities and landscapes globally? And what are its repercussions in art and popular culture?
